Again, the LATER built Mercury Capri engines ("technically" and those built between ~01/1992 -1994) used a LARGER diameter crankshaft. This Mercury Capri Crankshaft size change was applied to eliminate the problem that the Early Model Capris, with the smaller diameter crankshafts, which suffered with untimely split / damaged "noses". Ford replaced the crankshaft with larger diameter crankshafts to eliminate this problem "technically" in 01/1992, BUT PRACTICALLY SPEAKING, it appears this change was actually implemented earlier .....sometime in Mid - to - Late 1991. (** SEE NOTE BELOW) and continued using this larger/thicker crankshaft through 1992, 1993, and right through the end of the 1994 Mercury Capri model year production. If you have a Capri built on, or after 1992, you most likely will require the "LATE VERSION" Mercury Capri Harmonic Balancer / Mercury Capri Crankshaft Pulley, BUT please still go though the process described herein to check. For example, you may have a later model Capri which had an "engine swap" using an early Capri engine with smaller crankshaft or vice versa (we've seen these situations)...SO PLEASE CHECK JUST TO MAKE SURE.
(**) PLEASE NOTE: In spite of Ford's" technical" crankshaft change-over date of 01/1992, based on our experience, there appears to have been many model year 1991 Capris which have the updated crankshaft and hence REQUIRE the "LATE VERSION" harmonic balancer. Therefore, it is critically important to match your existing Mercury Capri Harmonic balancer to the correct replacement harmonic balancer by consulting a certified technician and by the using the above DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS, so as to select the correct replacement Mercury Capri Harmonic Balancer. AGAIN to double check which version (EARLY or LATE) harmonic balancer you require, 1) Check the build date of your Capri (was it built in late 1990, early, mid, or late 1991, or built in 1992, 1993, or 1994??), and 2) carefully examine your current harmonic balancer....the LATE model of the Harmonic Balancer itself (if disassembled from the V or Serpentine Belt Pulley) has four (4) bolt holes as well as one (1) smaller "pin" hole as opposed to a different configuration used in the EARLIER VERSION (AS PICTURED); thus, if your harmonic balancer does not look like the one pictured than you require the "LATE" Model version. These Mercury Capri Harmonic Balancers (LATE) is are no longer available from Ford new; they are considered obsolete. For ease of identification, the Ford part number for the LATER Version Mercury Capri Harmonic Balanccer is no longer active in the Ford parts database.
